They call Melbourne the sports capital of Australia. And, well, we’re certainly not going to dispute that!

And with so much talk around town regarding the end of the footy season (both AFL and NRL), it’s easy to accidentally overlook some of the lesser-known sporting events going on in the coming weeks.

Case in point: did you know we have a thriving ice hockey league?

 Ice Hockey Melbourne Accommodation

Wait… ice hockey?!

Yep, you heard right!

You’d be forgiven for not knowing we have our very own domestic ice hockey league. After all, 70% of our country is either desert or close to it!

Even our winters are relatively mild compared to our friends in the northern hemisphere.

While ice hockey might bring up images of moose, maple leaves and poutine, the sport also has a small but dedicated following Down Under.

It’s not hard to see why the sport has managed to secure loyal fanbase. It’s got everything we love in our sports: speed, big plays, and plenty of drama both on and off the rink.

And just like the AFL and NRL, the Australian Ice Hockey League (AIHL) is quickly coming up to the end of its 2018 season too!

With eight teams from around the country duking it out for the 2018 title, the next couple of weeks are going to be interesting for ice hockey fans!

Upcoming ice hockey fixtures

If you’re new to the sport and want to see what it’s all about, you’re in luck! There are plenty of fixtures in the coming weeks.

And with two of the eight teams based in Melbourne, what better place to watch your first game than right here?

There are still a handful of games left to go in the season - possibly more, depending on how Melbourne’s two teams perform in the playoffs.

Move quickly, and you might be able to land yourself a spot at one of the last few games before the finals begin.

Melbourne Ice vs Canberra Brave

First playing in in 2003 as part of a 3-team expansion of the league, Melbourne Ice is the current premier.

With a total of four titles under its belt, Melbourne Ice will be looking to replicate its golden run between 2010 and 2012 where it won three of its championships.

To do that, they’ll have to overcome the visiting Canberra Brave, who haven’t had the best of runs.

Needless to say, they’ll be on the prowl for some payback. And with seven straight at the time of writing, they might just do it!

And it’s not just one game either. With finals so close, they’ll be facing off against the Melbourne team twice in back-to-back games to see who makes it to the playoffs.

Melbourne Ice plays Canberra Brave in Melbourne on Saturday 25th and Sunday 26th August

AIHL Finals
