Once again Melbourne is preparing for a stellar weekend of sport as we commemorate the ANZACs on one of Australia and New Zealand’s most important national occasions.

Two blockbusters will take place on ANZAC Day: Melbourne Storm vs. Warriors at AAMI Park on Tuesday night, and Collingwood vs. Essendon at the MCG during the day. Who will you be cheering for?

NRL: Melbourne Storm vs. Warriors

Cheer on Melbourne’s only Rugby League team this ANZAC Day as the Storm take on the Warriors at AAMI Park!

The Warriors have named their team, and it will be a big match for off-contract player Kieran Foran, who’s seeking a trade to an Australian club. The NRL describes Foran as a possible replacement for departing Storm player Cooper Cronk.

Ben Matulino has been named as a reserve, a welcome step as he prepares for his comeback from a knee injury.

Melbourne Storm has enjoyed a stellar start to the season, with six wins from their opening seven, and sits comfortably in second position behind the Dragons.

Storm coach Craig Bellamy has named his squad too. Among familiar names like Billy Slater, Cooper Cronk and captain Cameron Smith we also welcome Will Chambers back from his one-week suspension, while Joe Stimson, Mark Nicholls, and Tui Kamikamika join the extended team.

RSL members will be at the stadium collecting funds for the ANZAC Appeal, so make sure you show your support by donating or buying a badge!

$1·       ANZAC Day Clash: Collingwood vs. Essendon

$1·       Tuesday, 25th April, 2017

$1·       3:20pm

$1·       MCG

Did you know that the famous ANZAC Day clash between Collingwood and Essendon was conceived by former Bombers coach Kevin Sheedy?

Sheedy served two years in the Australian Army from 1969-72, and put forward the idea of an annual clash between the Pies and Bombers; the first game was played in 1995.

And what a game it was – when the final siren sounded both teams were sitting on 111 points. An audience of 94,825 made the inaugural ANZAC Day clash the second-highest attended home-and-away match in the AFL’s history.

Both Essendon and Collingwood have had average starts to the season, sitting rather comfortably right in the middle of the ladder. Collingwood have one three of the last five clashes, but this time, AFL reporter Callum Twomey predicts a Bombers victory by 12 points. Who’s your money on?

The round five ANZAC Day clash is one of the highest – if not the highest – attended matches of the year, besides the Grand Final.

Getting to the MCG

A late afternoon match calls for a meal and a drink beforehand. Why not head to one of the hundreds of bars in Melbourne for a pre-match drink and meal before making your way to the hallowed grounds of the ‘G?

The 70 tram along Flinders Street will drop you right in front of the MCG within just a few minutes.

ANZAC Appeal

No matter what you’ve got planned for the ANZAC Day weekend, make sure you support the ANZAC Appeal. You can donate online here. Both NRL and AFL matches will also provide an opportunity to support the cause by buying an ANZAC badge or donating on the day.
